Update on Precautionary Measures and Home-Based Learning Days

Dear Parents/Guardians,

UPDATES ON PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AND HOME-BASED LEARNING DAYS

In light of the developing COVID-19 situation in Singapore, we have put in place strict precautionary measures over the past two months to keep our school a safe environment for our students, and to allow our students to continue learning.

1.     Staggered Dismissal Timings

With the recent spike in imported cases and the tightening of nationwide safe distancing efforts, we are further enhancing precautionary measures by reducing transient congestion during school dismissal. Please refer to the staggered dismissal timings below, which will take effect from Tuesday, 31 Mar 2020.

2.     Home-Based Learning Days and Staggered Timings of Online HBL via SLS

From April 2020, all MOE schools will implement one day of Home-Based Learning (HBL) per week. This will help us prepare for an extended period of HBL should the need arise, so that our students can continue with their learning. Our school will be conducting HBL on Wednesdays starting from 1 Apr 2020. Classroom lessons will still proceed as usual on the other days of the week.

The HBL activities come in different forms, such as e-lessons through the use of the School Learning Space (SLS), or other references like worksheets and textbooks. Please take note of the staggered timings of the online HBL via SLS for the following levels as shown below:

Primary 1 and 4

Primary 2 and 5

Primary 3 and 6

9:00 am to 11:00 am

10:30 am to 12:30 pm

1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Instructions for HBL days will be made available on our school website (https://canberrapri.moe.edu.sg/) on Tuesdays, from 3:00 pm. For more details, please refer to Annex A.

3.     Co-Curricular Activities, External Activities and After-School Programmes

Co-Curricular Activities will remain suspended for the rest of Term 2. External activities and those that involve mingling of students across schools – Learning Journeys, outdoor learning and the National School       Games – will also remain suspended for the rest of Term 2. The Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation will be cancelled. All after-school programmes, including supplementary and remedial lessons (with the exception of SDR, RRP, Higher Mother Tongue lessons and Foundation Math lessons), will continue to be suspended until Term 2 is over.

4.     Monitoring of COVID-19 Situation

MOE is monitoring the situation closely and we will update you should there be any changes to the precautionary measures that we are implementing. We urge parents to rely on official sources of information and not to circulate any unconfirmed information. If you have any further queries, please contact the General Office at telephone number 6759 7433.

ANNEX A

Home-Based Learning Days for Canberra Primary School

Preparing for HBL Days

Your child/ward will be provided with instructions on how to access their HBL materials by his/her teachers. As part of HBL, our school has prepared a series of activities to ensure continuity in the learning of our students. These HBL activities come in different forms, such as e-lessons through the use of the School Learning Space (SLS), or other references like worksheets and textbooks. These learning activities have been designed to allow our students to complete them independently.

We encourage you to support your child/ward by providing a conducive environment at home. You could do this by:

·        Working out a daily schedule/routine with your child/ward and guiding him/her in setting goals and scheduling tasks. For further tips on guiding your child/ward in setting goals, please refer to the Resilience Boosters at https://go.gov.sg/selresforparents.

·        Establishing an agreement with your child/ward on managing screen time. We will assign a maximum of 2 hours of online learning every day. For further tips and guides on reinforcing your child/ward’s cyber wellness, please refer to: https://ictconnection.moe.edu.sg/cyber-wellness/for-parents.

·        Encouraging your child/ward to maintain an optimistic and positive outlook while accepting the changes and emotions that he/she has had to face as part of going through HBL.

·        Reminding your child/ward to log in to SLS based on the staggered timings assigned to the different levels below:

Primary 1 and 4

Primary 2 and 5

Primary 3 and 6

9:00 am to 11:00 am

10:30 am to 12:30 pm

1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Instructions for HBL Available on School’s Website

The following will made available weekly on Tuesday at 3.00 pm on the school’s website (https://canberrapri.moe.edu.sg/) for parents/guardians and students to refer to:

  • A summary of topics to be covered for the various subjects; and
  • Detailed lesson guides for students for the various subjects.

SLS Account Management

Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to help your child/ward in the management of his/her SLS account. This would involve helping him/her to remember his/her username and password, as well as entering your email address in SLS. The latter would allow for a self-help password reset in the event that the password is forgotten and ensure that your child/ward’s learning is not disrupted on the HBL days.

A guide on how you can perform a self-help password rest was made available in hard copy to Primary 1 parents in Term 1 and in the attachment of the Parents Gateway message ‘Guide On SLS Accounted Management’ posted on 7 February 2020. The same guide is also available on the school’s website: https://canberrapri.moe.edu.sg/quick-links/student-learning-space.
