Dear Parents/Guardians,

1.     Welcome

Season’s greetings from one and all at Canberra Primary School. We look forward to warmly welcoming him/her back to school in 2021.

2.     2021 School Reopening

As announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Friday, 18 December 2020, the first day of school for next year’s P1 students is Monday, 4 January 2021, while P2 to P6 students will report to school on Tuesday, 5 January 2021. The staggered reopening of school is to allow for effective implementation of safe management measures (SMMs) and to ease the transition for P1 students.

3.     Staff Movement

We are pleased to welcome the following new staff who will be joining our Canberra family in 2021:

§  Mr Shah Jahan B Mohamed Iqbal, our new Vice Principal

§  Mdm Marian Alphonse, an English Language and Science Teacher

§  Mdm Sulaiha Bte Abd Aziz, an English Language and Mathematics Teacher

§  Ms Cheryl Lim Yi Wei, an English Language and Mathematics Teacher

§  Ms Gladys Chua Yun Ching, an English Language and Social Studies Teacher

We would also like to bid farewell to the following staff, express our sincere gratitude to them for their dedication to our school and wish them all the very best:

§  Mr Kumar Palaiyan, our Vice Principal

§  Mrs June Foo, our Level Head for ICT

§  Mdm Jessie Lee, our Assistant Year Head

§  Mrs Alice Lim, our Senior Teacher for Lower Primary Learners

§  Mdm Oon Yuan Lin, our Chinese Language and Music Teacher

4.     Arrival and Dismissal, Recess Timings and Munch Time

In line with MOE’s guidelines on SMMs, the school will continue to implement staggered arrival and dismissal times. Doing so will help to ease the traffic movement in and around the school compound in the morning and afternoon, as well as reduce intermingling, even as Singapore enters Phase 3 of the Circuit Breaker exit. For your ease of reference, we reproduce below a table summarising students’ staggered arrival, dismissal and recess timings, which we had previously shared in our letter to parents dated Wednesday, 18 November 2020:

*As mentioned to our letter to P1 parents/guardians on 21 December 2020, P1 students will report either at 7.35 a.m. (Care 1 to Care 4) or 7.45 a.m. (Care 5 to Care 8) on 4 January 2021 only. From 5 January 2021 onwards, P1 students will be required to report to school by 7.35 a.m.

Please note that flag-raising for the whole school will commence at 7.40 a.m. and the first period will therefore start at 7.45 a.m. We would like to seek your support in ensuring that your child/ward comes to school on time so that he/she is not late for lessons.

For Munch Time, students will be given a short in-class break of about 10 minutes at around 12 noon on days that they do not have early structured lunch. We encourage parents/guardians to pack light and dry food items or fruits which are more convenient for your child/ward to consume in class. The early structured lunch break for students will take place when after-school programmes (e.g. remedial, supplementary and enrichment lessons) start. More details on these programmes will be provided in our letter in Term 1 Week 1.

5.     Temperature-taking and Wearing of Masks

The school will continue to conduct daily temperature-taking in 2021. P1 students will be issued one Oral Digital Thermometer (ODT) by his/her Form Teacher on the first day of school. The P1 Form Teachers will help to store the thermometers in class for students to check their temperature daily. For P2 to P6 students, we would like to seek the help of parents/guardians to ensure that your child/ward brings a working ODT to school every day.

We seek your assistance in ensuring your child/ward wears a mask to school daily. The school will also be issuing a CPS mask to your child/ward on the first day of school as a welcome gift. Please note that it is not compulsory for your child/ward to use the CPS mask. Your child/ward may choose to wear other masks that are appropriate for school use. Students should carry at least 1 spare mask in their bag and a mask cover/resealable bag labelled with their name to store their used mask.

6.     Student Handbook

The school will be issuing the Student Handbook free of charge to your child/ward in the first week of school in 2021. However, if the Student Handbook is misplaced, a replacement copy can be purchased at $3.00 from the school’s General Office.

7.     Road Safety Matters

We would like to ask for the support of parents/guardians in reinforcing good road safety habits such as practising the kerb drill (i.e. “look right, look left and look right again”, ensuring that all vehicles have stopped before crossing the road carefully with one hand raised high), using the pedestrian crossing and refraining from jaywalking. Please remind your child/ward to always practise the kerb drill when crossing the road. If your child/ward cycles to school, please ensure that he/she wears a bicycle helmet, knows and practises safe cycling and is a competent cyclist.

We would also like to urge all parents/guardians who are driving to school to be aware of the speed limit within the school compound and to slow down when entering or exiting the school. Please teach your child/ward to alight from your vehicle independently, so that you are able to move off promptly after you have dropped off your child.

Thank you and we wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Sam Wong
