Dear Parents/Guardians,

1. Welcome

Greetings to you and your family and a warm welcome to your child/ward to our school! We hope that he/she has had a good break and is looking forward to this new phase of his/her life – being a primary school student!

2. Orientation Week Programme: “To CPS We Go!”

To help your child/ward settle down and be more familiar with the school, he/she will be participating in the “To CPS We Go” Programme from Monday, 4 January 2021 to Friday, 8 January 2021 during curriculum hours. The objectives of the programme for Primary 1 students are:

a) To familiarise themselves with Canberra Primary School;

b) To develop a love for learning; and

c) To enjoy coming to school to learn.

Through this programme, the students will engage in a variety of activities to build rapport with their Form Teachers and classmates, and to strengthen their social-emotional competencies while adhering to the Safe Management Measures (SMMs). We hope that these meaningful first week of school orientation experiences will help them have a smoother transition from pre-school to Primary 1.

3. First Day of School on 4 January 2021

As announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the first day of school for P1 2021 is Monday, 4 January 2021. We are pleased to inform you that one parent/guardian will be allowed to accompany your child/ward into the school to ease his/her transition to Canberra Primary School and meet your child/ward’s Form Teachers. We seek your support in strictly adhering to the one parent/guardian limit so that SMMs can be implemented effectively. Please also note that parents/guardians will not be allowed to accompany their child/ward into the school from Tuesday, 5 January 20201 onwards.

To minimize intermingling, please note that the school is implementing staggered arrival times according to your child’s/ward’s class for 4 January 2021 only as stated below. We seek your kind understanding to report to school punctually at the stated arrival time. Please note that parents/guardians will not be allowed to park your vehicles in school carpark and are encouraged to park at the nearby HDB carparks next to the school.

Please ensure that your child/ward puts on the nametags issued by the school upon arrival for the month of January. Our staff will be available to direct you and your child/ward to the students’ respective classrooms from the Main Gate after temperature-taking is completed. Students will then remain in their classrooms while parents/guardians will be directed to another venue for the parents’ programme upon drop-off of their child/ward in their respective classrooms.

Students will also be allowed to purchase food from the canteen and we encourage parents/guardians to give pocket money of about $2.00 to your child/ward if he/she is intending to purchase his/her own food during recess.

Due to the limited space in the canteen area and to ensure the well-being of students who are not wearing masks when eating, parents/guardians will not be allowed to view their child/ward during their recess. Please rest assured that our team of teachers will be stationed at the canteen to assist your child/ward to buy his/her food.

5.     Things to Bring on First Day of School

Students are required to bring only the following items/books to school on 4 January 2021. This will ensure that students come better prepared for school and do not carry too many items to school:

  • Pencil case
  • Writing & colouring materials
  • Story book (English)
  • Water bottle (plain water) & Munch Time item

Munch Time: Students will be given a short break of about 10 minutes in class at around 12.00 noon to have some light snacks on all days of school. Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to pack healthy food that is light and dry or fruits so that it is convenient for students to consume the food in class.

6.     Temperature-taking and Wearing of Masks

The school will continue to conduct daily temperature-taking in 2021. Your child/ward will be issued one Oral Digital Thermometer (ODT) by his/her Form Teacher on the first day of school. The Form Teachers will help to store the thermometers in class for students to check their temperature daily.

We seek your assistance in ensuring your child/ward wears a mask to school daily. The school will also be issuing a CPS mask to your child/ward on the first day of school as a welcome gift. Please note that is not compulsory for your child/ward to use the CPS mask. Your child/ward may choose to wear other masks that are appropriate for school use. Students should carry at least 1 spare mask in their bag and a mask cover/resealable bag labelled with their name to store their used mask.

7.     Pupil’s Handbook

The school will be issuing the Pupil’s Handbook free of charge to your child/ward in the first week of school in 2021. However, if the Pupil’s Handbook is misplaced, a replacement copy can be purchased at $3.00 from the school’s General Office.

We seek your kind cooperation and understanding to abide by SMMs to keep our students and staff safe. We wish both you and your child/ward an enjoyable and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing our child/ward in school on Monday, 4 January 2021.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Sam Wong
